Wollstonecraft began her career in 1787 with Thoughts on the Education of Daughters and then spent several years writing reviews, pamphlets, Mary (a novel), and her first foray into pre-feminist polemic, A Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790), which was a passionate response to Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France. ![]() A classic of post-revolutionary thought, shaped by the Enlightenment, Wollstonecraft’s Vindication changed life for women the world over. ![]() This little book, which declared that “from the tyranny of man, the greater number of female follies proceed”, set off the first ripples of what would eventually become the worldwide movement for women’s rights. Although she does not insist on the equality of the sexes, you’ll still find, articulated in thrilling clarity, the essence of Wollstonecraft’s argument for the education of women, and for an increased female participation in everyday society. In hindsight, however, we can now see that its assault on “mistaken notions of female excellence” was the first great expression of feminist ideas. T he term “feminism” did not exist when Mary Wollstonecraft wrote this short book (just 98pp in my Vintage Classics edition) and some critics have resisted its author’s identification with the movement. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this final novel of the Percy Jackson series, Percy worries that his fate may be sealed no matter what he does. ![]() From attempting to convince their immortal parents to stand and fight on Olympus, to engaging in hand-to-hand combat with Kronos himself, this band of campers has a wild ride in store for them. ![]() Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and the rest of the residents of Camp Half-Blood must do what they can to stop Kronos and his minions from taking down Olympus and ending the benefits our civilization reaps from the presence of the gods in America. Were the two World Wars historical accidents or were they the undertakings of powerful yet undocumented cabals for the creation and expansion of the Soviet Union? Was the Soviet Union the ultimate successor to European colonial empires? What role did the alliance with Germany play in the implosion of the Ottoman Empire? Why were so many soldiers sacrificed at Gallipoli? Why did Germany avoid invading the newly formed Soviet State? Why did the Nazis avoid a ground invasion of Britain? What happened at Dunkirk and Dieppe? Who was Fritz Kraemer? How did Germany end up with one half under the Soviets and the other half under Nato? Why were atom bombs dropped on Japan even though bombing raids had brought greater destruction to Japanese cities? Was a bipolar New World Order, dominated exclusively by Nato and the Soviet Union, a strategy for controlling the populations of the world? What it wasn’t, however, was a story about how a protagonist became a power by farming, which was (I admit) what I was hoping for. So when I heard there was a book about a gamer who got reincarnated, not as a powerful wizard or warrior with an obvious path to demigodhood, but as a farmer, I thought ‘okay, that idea has legs if it’s done well.’ The title convinced me, because it was unafraid of its own corniness, and the fact that the art was riffing on Grant Wood’s American Gothic amused my inner artist. I’ve read enough in the subgenre that I am no longer as easily delighted as I used to be. The pioneers of the niche paved the way but like urban fantasy with its cookie-cutter snark and college-aged narrators, it’s getting harder and harder for authors be clever and funny in a way that sticks with the reader. ![]() LitRPG is a subgenre that revolves around the cleverness of its protagonists and its embrace of tongue-in-cheek humor. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The complexity of her characters only makes Choi’s delivery more impactful, especially as readers get a glimpse into the conflicted emotions between Jayne and her sister June.
